Beth was getting very nervous. There hasn't been anyone else on the streets for the last twenty minutes. She was in the working area. Normally at this time of night the streets would be filled with pimps, whores, dealers, and addicts. It was only eleven, where were they? She unconsciously began to finger the locket that hung around her neck, as she often did when she was nervous. What was in it? She couldn't remember. She had opened it when she was younger, and that was enough to know never to open it again.
A car could be heard driving closer, fast. Thank God, she thought. But her feelings quickly changed to those of dread when she realized the car was that of the john she had robbed earlier. Terrified she ran away. Thanks to her spiked heels she was constantly falling. God, where the hell is everyone? She fell again, hard, twisting her ankle on the way down. The car noisily stopped beside her, and the john stepped out. Beth found herself unable to, move, think, hear, or feel. She was vaguely aware of the john kicking her and his shouts, but all she could focus on was the intolerable, deafening hum in her ears. Next thing she knew time just seemingly slipped away......
The next conscious thought she had was to stop him. After a few minutes see remembered who the him was, the john. The next few minutes were spent trying to regain control of her basic motor functions. Her head was spinning all she could hear was that hum. She was slightly aware of the man between her legs making small incisions with an x-acto knife and was sucking out blood through them. Her upper thighs were covered in cuts. She could feel her smooth, nude body against the rough fabric of the over-starched bed sheets. There was only one thing she could imagine doing, opening the locket. She slowly moved her left hand to her neck, and followed the tarnished, silver chain to the locket. Once she felt the cool metal of the locket she popped it open.
The humming intensified as the room around dissolved into a gray mist. A searing pain filled her entire body, no part of her escaped. She could feel her mind grow, things she never knew she never knew, she understood. The incomprehensible suddenly made perfect sense. Then suddenly she was tossed back into reality. It felt as if she dove into a pool of subzero temperature water. She was suffocating, no air was in her lungs. Then she understood. She could breath, move, think and feel again. Reality was now a lump of clay, and she was its sculptor. She had more power than God, there was nothing she couldn't do.
For the first time in years Bethany was smiling. She stood up and walked out of the motel room. The john was surprised, but started swearing loudly. On a whim Beth waved her hand and the john was slowly turned inside out. Beth didn't bother to stay and watch, she walked out without dressing.
